Dear Filipinas All Over The World,

If you’re a Filipino, then you probably know about the show Jessica Soho. If you’re not a Filipino, that’s okay, you can still stay. As much as I hate to address to specific people and make the rest feel out of place, I just feel that this issue has to be addressed, so bear with me just this once.

So what about that show?

Their latest segment featured a woman who overdoses on glutathione injections because according to her, you have the notion as a child that when it’s dark, it’s not beautiful. Then the show went on, featuring others and their own stories with glutathione.

I’m not going to deny it. This is sad, but it’s also reality. Filipinas don’t see the beauty in their brown skin. Even I am a testament to this. I am a Filipina and I have a natural fair skin (not white, but the lightest shade of brown), and I get all sorts of praises for it from friends, classmates, and strangers. I don’t want to be rude, but I don’t appreciate it. What’s wrong with your brown skin? Does lighter mean better? Just…stop.

Which brings me to what I want to say today, something I couldn’t keep silent about anymore…

Dear lovely Filipina, please stop obsessing over getting whiter. A lot of Filipinas spend so much money on whitening products while white women all over the world dream of having brown skin.

There you have it, I finally got this off my chest. I really don’t want to rant here, but I want to sleep peacefully tonight.

The point is, whatever the color of your skin is, love it. White, black, brown, or yellow, love it.

  1. It’s always a case of wanting what you can’t have. I think in Asia, ‘white skin’ is seen as beautiful because dark skin = out in the sun = labor = poor. I’m Malaysian Chinese, I’m considerably tanned and I love it. But then the mentality that white is better has been there for centuries, it will take time to change society’s perceptions. Good on you that you’re comfy in your own skin. 🙂
